William Stanley McBroom

During the past year, the "Vietnam Moving Wall" stopped in St. Regis Falls for a few days. Fortunately, we were able to obtain a couple of photographs of William (Billy) McBroom's name on the wall. William Stanley McBroom gave his life in service of his country, while serving in the army in South Vietnam, during the year of 1967.

The Knox website is using this opportunity to honor, not only this very fine person, but all Knox students and all our brave men and women that served not only in Vietnam, but in all theaters of war during the past 2 centuries.

Alice M. Ferguson

From Daughter Wendy:

Thanks so much for adding Mom’s memory to your web site. I wrote a brief story of her life.

Mom was born in Russell, NY on December 10th 1939. She was one of five children. She had three brothers and one sister. Her parents were Helen and Andrew Webb. Her father passed away when she was about 14. He worked in the mines and died of the black lung disease.

Mom graduated with the class of 1958. The class picture is also on your website. I am told that she was a very good student and received some sort of class medals upon graduation. She was always the best speller in our family!

At 18 years old, Mom met my father Robert J. Ferguson. They married shortly after and moved to the Penfield / Webster area of NY. This is about 3 — 4 hours south of Russell. Mom raised four children in an old farmhouse. Times were tough for her but she was a very strong woman both physically and emotionally. She worked very hard at keeping our family together. Mom loved to be included in our softball games as she was the only one who could hit that ball a "country mile". We loved it! As much as she had a fun side, she could be and was often very tough on us. She wanted to make sure her kids grew up properly and treated others with respect.

Mom and Dad divorced in 1978 / 1979 timeframe. It was then that she went to work in the nursing homes. She worked at Hill Haven nursing home in Webster for 11 years until she moved from Webster to Fairport. Her next job was with the Fairport Baptist Nursing Home where she worked for 1 7 years. Mom retired at 62 years old.

In 2003 Mom suffered a heart attack. She was 63 years old at that time. She had to have emergency quadruple by-pass surgery. She recuperated quite well and very quickly. She was independent and wanted to remain living on her own for as long as possible. She lived with me (her daughter) for about 9 months and found it too boring! I worked most of the time that year and was not able to spend lots of time with her. She moved again for the last time to a senior complex in Palmyra, NY. This was close to her son and his family where there was a lot more to do and be a part of. She enjoyed her new friends and neighbors playing bingo and going shopping together.

Mom and I traveled frequently back to Edwards, NY to see her mother Helen Webb. My grandmother is 93 years old and has lived on her own until this last week and now resides in the nursing home in Canton.

In September of 2007, Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. She did all she could to keep her spirits up and did well with the treatments. Sadly, she passed away in a hospice home on July 17, 2008. Needless to say, we miss her terribly. She was a wonderful mother.

Robert Francis Dow

Robert Francis Dow, 78, formerly of Potsdam. Long-time St. Lawrence County resident Robert Francis Dow passed away in Tucson, Arizona on November 30 in the loving presence of his family.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 28, 1929, and was a 1946 graduate of Knox Memorial High School. He attended St. Lawrence University before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1948. On June 25th, 1955, he married Dorothea Mae Sutter in Iron River, Michigan. He worked in telephone communications for 33 years, retiring in 1986 from the Potsdam office.

Bob was extremely active in his community, and belonged to many organizations. He was a 45-year member of the St. Lawrence Gem and Mineral Society, and a 33-year member of the Middle Branch of the Stillwater Hunting Club. He belonged to the Potsdam Lion's Club for four years, and was one of the founding members of the Russell Fire Department. As a member of the telephone Pioneers Of America Club, he served several years as a clown for the Special Olympics throughout New York State. He was a Justice of the Peace in Russell from 1959 to 1964. One of his greatest pleasures was his 35-year involvement in scouting, beginning with his own troop in Russell, where he was a scoutmaster, followed by 20 years as Assistant District Commissioner of Scouts.

Bob and his wife Dottie founded Lawg Caybun Artisans seventeen years ago, becoming well-known exhibitors at craft fairs, gem shows and gift shops throughout the Northeast. They also fulfilled their lifelong goal of building a scribe-fitted log cabin on the shores of a quiet pond. There they began their retirement years together, passing on their love for the beauty of nature and art, and their appreciation of simplicity to their grandchildren.

In recent years, he resided with his wife at Boyd Pond in Russell, and spent his winters in Tucson.

Bob's passions were many -- fishing, rock picking, woodworking, stained glass, silver-smithing, music, camping and traveling, to mention a few.

One has only to look at the many treasured pieces of art and special memories he created for his family and friends to know the full measure of his life.

Bob is survived by Dottie, his wife of 52 years; four children, Robin (Dow) Hopper of Chugiak, Alaska, and her husband Bruce, Nancy Dow of Morrissonville, and her companion Bruce Kilgore, Addie (Dow) Smethurst of Bellingham, Washington, and her husband Rob, and Andrew Dow of Potsdam, and his wife Debra; as well as eight grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes, no services are planned. He will be remembered for his quiet kindness, sense of humor, quirky fishing hats and his love of family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
